Giinawind - About Us
Hello everyone! Our names are Anne (she/her) and Brooke Morrow (they/them). We are artists and storytellers from Chippewa of Rama First Nation.
Brooke
I am a 23-year-old, Two-Spirit individual, born and raised in Bracebridge, ON, only a short drive from my community in Rama. As a child, my grandfather would bring me down for the powwows, where I remember admiring the handiwork of our people and the rows upon rows of shiny beads. In tenth grade, when my teacher brought in an elder from Curve Lake to teach us about moccasin-making, I learned that I might be able to make pretty things, too.
In my first year of university in Ottawa, I quickly picked up earring and loom beading. I soon began advertising on Instagram, eventually shipping out our first order — a pair of newborn moccasins — on March 14th, 2020. We have grown steadily since then, often attending vendor markets across Muskoka and in Rama, including local powwows.
Sometimes, the business takes a backseat to my schooling as I finish my MA in Contemporary Art Theory from the University of Ottawa. However, with the help of my mother, Anne, we still find time to complete large-scale projects and wholesale orders, as well as offer varying workshops to local schools.
